John Quincy Adams

1767 - 1848

John Quincy Adams was the sixth president of the United States, serving from 1825 to 1829.   In a long and remarkable career, Adams became as famous for his diplomacy as his statesmanship.

First posted as minister to Holland by George Washington in 1793, Adams was then sent to London to help negotiate a treaty intended to clear up the remaining differences between America and Britain following the War of Independence.    During this mission, he met and fell in love with Louisa Catherine Johnson and they were married at All Hallows, Barking in 1797.

Adams, who was an ardent campaigner for freedom of speech and the abolishion of slavery, went on to become U.S. Secretary of State and served eight terms as a member of the House of Representatives.
