| Harvard
University, which celebrated its 370th anniversary in 2006, is the oldest
institution of higher learning in America. Former students include six presidents
of the United States
Founded 16 years after the arrival of the Pilgrim Fathers at Plymouth, the university was established in 1636 by colonists in Massachusetts. At that time a name had not been decided on but when John Harvard, an emigrant minister, died leaving his library and half his estate to the university it was named in his honour. The site chosen for Harvard University was the village of Newtowne. The village was renamed Cambridge in recognition of Cambridge University, England where many of the leading Massachusetts colonists had been educated.
